i can’t hug every cat

Oh boy – so, I never posted the original video (though it is funny, I’m pretty sure its faker than Travolta’s hair), but I have to post the remix because it is about 1000x better and everything these guys do is just pure hilarity. This is for all you cat ladies!

help a sister out

Posted: May 26th, 2011 | Author: | Filed under: cats, good | Tags: , , | 8 Comments »

I don’t usually ask things like this on my own blog, but I could really use a favor, you guys!

The animal shelter/sanctuary I volunteer for*, Kitten Rescue, is currently in the running to win $15,000 to continue their work rescuing/treating homeless kittens & cats – an overwhelming problem here in LA. If you don’t mind, pretty please take a second and vote for them. You only have to vote once, but please confirm your vote in your email or it won’t go through. ;)

America's Favorite Animal Shelter Contest - help your animal shelter win $15,000 - vote today!

It would mean so much to me (and the cats, more importantly!) if they could get this money. It’s heartbreaking to see the volume and condition of the kitties that come into the shelter – but the tireless work of the men and women who volunteer their time to help them is inspiring. Running a shelter/foster organization is not easy, or cheap – vet bills, food, medicine, shelter, litter – it really adds up quickly. Under current conditions, Kitten Rescue adopts out over 1,000 cats a year – imagine how much that could go up if they were able to get this funding!

Thanks in advance to any and all who vote! It literally takes just a second – and this is a cause near & dear to my heart, as my own girls are both rescues and I can’t imagine what my life would be like without them.

* Actually,  I am now one of their Volunteer Coordinators, which is super exciting news!

“did you lose a cat?”

I don’t know where this picture came from, but it’s making my day. My Grandpa down in Dallas, who is the Chief Email Forwarder in our family, sent it my way. And now I’m sharing it with you. I mean, how can you not share something like this? Even if it is 100%, without a doubt, Photoshopped.

Oh how I wish it were real.

video: last minutes with oden

Warning: I am an extremely sensitive sap when it comes to animals, pets, etc. That said, I don’t think I’ve ever cried so much watching a video on the internet than I did watching this. It’s a documentary clip of Jason Wood’s last moments with his beloved dog Oden, before he had to put him down due to his suffering from cancer. It’s beautiful, raw, and full of emotion. As I’m sure is true with any pet owner out there, it touches a part of me that holds one of my greatest fears. Thank you Jason for being so brave and sharing this with the world.

And thanks to Boz for posting this!

baby cats + japanese television

Posted: March 6th, 2011 | Author: | Filed under: cats, funny | Tags: , , | No Comments »

A little Sunday silliness for you today: baby kittens and Japanese television, a winning combination in anyone’s book! Aside from the precious little babes, my fave part of this video has to be the weird sound effects they use each time a kitten moves its paws. And of course, the over-the-top squeals coming from the hosts. I wish I knew what they were saying!

Three cheers for the internet, and for Kitten Rescue, who tweeted this vid!

a vintage poem by me

Posted: November 30th, 2010 | Author: | Filed under: cats, funny | Tags: , | 3 Comments »

“CATS, CATS HOW I LOVE CATS
I THINK THEY ARE ADORABLE
THOUGH SOME PEOPLE THINK THEY ARE HORRIBLE!
I WISH I KNEW WHY!
THEY ARE SO CUTE MY, OH. MY!
I LOVE MINE SO MUCH,
ESPESIALLY IT’S SOFT TOUCH!”

This poem was authored by myself, Sarah Smith, in my earliest writing days. As you can see, not much has changed.

united bamboo cat calender 2011

Posted: October 17th, 2010 | Author: | Filed under: cats, fashion | Tags: , | No Comments »

United Bamboo might just be my favorite clothing label of all-time.  This is a pretty outstanding declaration considering I’ve never really even seen a piece of their clothing, let alone worn one.  My love affair with UB is based solely upon the fact that each year they create miniature versions of their clothes, put them on a bunch of adorable cats, take professional grade photographs, and publish them a fashion cat calendar.

Last year I didn’t get my hands on one of these wonderful works of art but this year – this year that’s changing.  One look at these behind-the-scenes shots of the photoshoot and I was SOLD!  I mean, how can you not love this?  Precious wrapped up in precious. Too bad I can’t find them online anywhere.  Boooooo hooo!

P.S. One word about how I posted two cat posts in two days and you’re forever banned from my blog.

P.P.S. Just kidding you can come back!  I love you!

Update! The 2011 calendar is now available for pre-order. $50 is a lot for a calendar, but I think this is one I’m willing to splurge on.  Just ordered mine!
