It’s that time of week again!  Let’s stop griping about our jobs, boyfriends, finances and first world problems for a minute so we can appreciate all the GOOD, positive things in our lives.  You know, all that stuff that goes otherwise unnoticed because we’re way too jaded to realize just how good we have it!  Happy Things I Love Thursday!

Museum day. This past weekend we ventured out to get a peek at a side of our city we hadn’t seen yet.  Saturday was a little museum day – we visited the La Brea Tar Pits to see all the old bones, the pits where archaeologists dig (even to this very day!) and learn a bit about LA history.  It was seriously cool!  Then we headed to the LACMA next door for a different type of cultural experience – art!  We caught a tour of the John Baldessari exhibit, Pure Beauty, and it was amazing.  Baldessari actually gave up painting in the 60s (70s?) and CREMATED all his previous painted art (save for a few pieces that his sister had stashed in her garage – they are on display) to “rid his life of accumulated art.”  The ashes are a part of the exhibit, complete with a headstone.  His more recent work is done in more conceptual art forms like video and photography.  If you live in LA or another city where his exhibit comes around, I urge to to check it out!  Very inspiring.

Naps after getting out of the shower. Is this or is this not the best feeling ever?  Especially after completing a 5 mile hike in Temsecal canyon.  Your entire body is exhausted and you feel so relaxed.   Your hair is still in a towel but you can’t help but pass out in the afternoon light.  I woke up sandwiched between a husband and a cat, which was the sweetest part.

Fresh, unwritten-in notebooks. I LOVE new notebooks.  So clean, untouched and full of potential.  Office supplies in general make me pretty giddy (inherited that love from my Mom), but new notebooks (and writing instruments) are on the top of the list.

blast off!

Droplets of love:

hiking the entire 4.5 miles up and around Temescal Canyon – serious views up there! • chugging water • work parties • finally getting to spend more than half an hour in the direct sun… it was glorious • kitten kisses • fajitas • the way LA is super quiet on weekend mornings – except in our favorite donut shop • watching Arrested Development while eating said donuts & drinking coffee • foster kitties at the farmer’s market, though it makes me extremely sad that I can’t take them all home! • a fridge stocked with fresh fruit & vegetables • crying happy tears in church • the elderly female museum docent that gave us a tour of the Baldessari exhibit – hilarious • getting scolded for taking photos in the gallery and having the guards follow us around the rest of the time • the way my 7 and 8 yr old kitties turn into kittens when you pull out a piece of string • game nights with our neighbors • hole-in-the-wall pizza places, cheap and TASTY • watching YouTube videos of piglets, chicks, and baby penguins • lemongrass chicken banh mi (Vietnamese baguette sandwiches) from EatPhamishBest Week Ever • quiet weeks at the office when people are on vacation • when Scout takes naps with me under the covers • really good sneezes • when Virgin America has sales, therefore I am able to buy tickets for necessary trips home at half the cost (TOTAL SCORE) • freezing dinner ahead of time so I don’t have to cook • planning my birthday party menu (it’s going to be fantastic!) • doctors offices • watching more Law & Order SVU than is healthy • making fun family plans for our trip to VA in October • cute things in costumes.

Now you go!

Completely in love with these images by Mert Alas & Marcus Piggett in W September 2010 issue.  The colors are outstanding!  So bold, fresh and alive.  It’s like being resuscitated.

Things I Love Thursday:

Upcoming visits with family and friends.  My social calendar is filling up for the fall and I couldn’t be more excited.   Not only is my birthday coming up, which guarantees a boatload of fun with my nearest and dearest, but my brother is also coming into town (for my birthday, mind you), my high school reunion is the first weekend of October (Virginia in the fall = heaven) which is another opportunity to hang with my family and oldest friends, Julian’s cousin will be in town in September, and in the very near future – pizza & game night with our fantastically fantastic neighbors tonight!

My HTC Incredible, which continues to have phenomenal service (I’m living in a dropped-call-free world and it’s wonderful, ladies!).  All those months of going back & forth over whether or not I could LIVE without the iPhone were just prolonging the sweet nectar of freedom I’m feeling right now.  So far, no gripes about it.  My favorite app is the Task Manager, which can auto-kill any and all apps you are running to save battery life.  It’s crucial.

Waking up on my own every morning. Before my alarm clock (also known as my husband)!  I’m not sure what I’m doing to get better sleep at night, but these past few days I have been up & at ‘em earlier than I usually am, and without needing to be forced out of the tangle of sheets.  This pleases me greatly because despite my love for sleep, I have always had a strong desire to be a morning person, and there are few, few things nicer in life than a cup of coffee and hours of solace just after the sun comes up.  Right?  Pray my early streak lasts.

WORLD ROCKERS:

finding cute and well-fitting white tanks on sale for $3.50….and promptly buying six of them • slow cookers • white cotton • meyer’s lavender dryer sheets • bell peppers • exposed brick • real-life magazines (not of the digital nature) • wood floors with area rugs • my cats’ fur after a good brushing • watching funny cat videos on YouTube with Julian • finding out my brother will be in town for my birthday – the first time in YEARS we’ve spent my birthday together! • painting my nails on my balcony • watching my kitties roll around outside • friendly neighbors • croissants • old men wearing white pants • breezy summer Saturdays with all the windows open • things organized neatly • tea cakes  • birthday parties with friends • Scott Pilgrim vs The World (so great!) • fitting into jeans I wore when I was 21 • Scoutieeee! • “Everybody do the Pep-per dance, get a worm, eat it, and put it in your pants” • living in a world where Advil exists if you really need it (I really needed it Tues) • pasta of all kinds • iChat • old internet friends • Yankee Candles • massive sales at Anthropologie • getting iTunes receipts in my inbox from my 13 year old sister and 10 year old brother’s song and app downloads (they are linked to my account) – is it wrong that I get a little choked up from this? I find it so cute.  • talk radio, specifically AM 980 here in LA  • cooking at home, which 90% of the time, is better than eating out.

And so I ask, sunshine, what’s making you cheerful today?  If you can’t think of anything worth getting giddy about, here are Five Ways to Become Happier Today (taken from Gala Darling, my original inspiration for Things I Love Thursday and a fantastic source of inspo for anyone seeking more self-love)

You guys have to really forgive me for not posting as often these past couple weeks. It’s just that I’ve been so very busy, between work, traveling, and making up for lost time with my beau. I missed my Wednesday Bits & Pieces, but I do have lots of cool links to share with you, so I’ll just keep them stored up for next week, when I hopefully will have more time. I also have to tell you all about how my gluten-free journey ended (with no pain, I might add), but that’ll just have to wait. BUT- I will not miss a Things I Love Thursday, even if it’s short, because there’s just too much to be thankful for!

Among the awesomeness:

things i love thursday

What a fine day this is! This week, Thursday is my Friday, because tomorrow morning I’m packing up and shipping out to Nashville for the weekend. I’m actually excited to fly, and I didn’t think I’d be able to say that so soon after our extensive wedding/honeymoon traveling in May. What a nightmare that was! I think I can handle the four hour flight to TN, however, and I’m very much looking forward to what will be waiting for me on the other side!

Some of the stuff making me happy this week:

  • Ordering an HTC Incredible! after months of deliberation and years of whining about service, my contract with AT&T is finally up and I’m ready to kick that crummy service to the curb once & for all.  To answer your question, yes, at times I think I might miss having an iPhone.  But, the amount of frustration I feel over having seven dropped calls in a row are not worth the cool-factor. It’s literally wearing on my physically!  Isn’t that pathetic?  I have too many friends and family far away to sacrifice not having a cell phone that WORKS.  Plus, I’ve heard nothing but good things about the Incredible.  I can’t wait for the phone to arrive and for the moment I have full cell reception in my apartment and won’t have to stand in awkward positions to get service.  Extra coolness:  I got the phone on Amazon for only $149 with a 2 year contract.  It wasn’t as painful to sign a 2-year contract with Verizon as it was with AT&T.  And thanks to my Prime account, I got 2 day shipping free. Hip hip hooray!
  • Weddings! The reason I’m flying to Nashville is to see the wedding of two of the cutest people on Earth, Kayla and Tyler.  Now that my own wedding is behind me, I’m beginning to look forward to enjoying weddings again.  I can’t wait to see these two tie the knot and then celebrate!  The question remains:  will I cheat on my gluten-free diet to eat wedding cake?  Pray for my strength, thx.

D’autres choses j’aime:

free lunch – still amazing, even after a few weeks | hearing crickets chirping outside – even in the middle of Hollywood. reminds me of home! | mediatemple‘s customer service | mashed cauliflower | waking up before 7 on my own and being fully awake | finding a note from julian in the bottom of the trash bin (if you didnt miss me already, you definitely do now) | making to-do lists, few things in life are as gratifying as crossing list items off | Dave Ramsey’s ‘Total Money Makeover’ – awesome book! | handwriting | realizing that there are little people in Nashville that call me ‘aunt Sarah’ – I’ve never been an aunt before!! And they are the most perfect kiddos ever! | picture texts from my super hot husband | @ replies on Twitter from his fans telling me they think he is the most handsome man on the planet since Heath Ledger died (ok…? hah!) | watching The Women and being reminded of when I played Sylvia Fowler in our high school production of the original play | knowing the lyrics to really popular pop/r&b/rap songs and not being ashamed (I blame my short commute for the fact that I listen to the radio again) | soft, fluffy, (new) white sheets, fresh from the dryer | meyer’s lavender-scented dryer sheets | the new quinoa recipe i tried this week – omg, so good! | watching all the chick flicks i can handle before my husband comes home | surprise birthday parties for my girlfriend Tracy | chocolate custard with caramel, almonds and figs on top | realizing one of my cats resembles a furry gummy bear | moving to a new team at myspace | rediscovering a dress in my closet that I had pretty much forgotten about – it’s like shopping for free! | good hair days | coffee | looking forward to fall (yes, already!)

Your turn!

This week is not the happiest in recent history for me, as my hubs is in Nashville filming for the next week and a half and I am left here alone to cook for one, spend my nights without any cute newlywed banter, rely on my cats for snuggling, and attempt to make coffee for myself as wonderfully as he does (it’s a challenge). I miss him so. But there are still so many things I love in general, and so I give you this week’s Things I Love Thursday (#28!).

Netflix. You may have heard me mention more than a few times that we don’t have cable. A few months ago, we invested in a super nice Blu-Ray player that streams from Netflix and a few other places (we actually got a great out-of-the-box deal at Best Buy). I am not one to spend lots of money on home entertainment systems, but these past couple months we have MORE than made up for that cost. You can pretty much get anything on Netflix these days, including TV shows, and many of them stream so you don’t even have to wait for the DVD in the mail. We are definitely getting our moneys worth from Netflix… I don’t miss cable one single bit!

The library. I used to LOVE the library as a kid, back when there was no such thing as Amazon, before books could be read via a digital handheld device. I love the peacefulness of it, the little old librarians, the fact that you can borrow any book for free, hang out and study/research or read for as long as you want and no one will ever kick you out (unless they’re closing). As an adult, I have been less than loyal to my library, but all that has changed this past week. I’ve gone a little nuts lately and my hold list and current stack of borrowed books at home is a bit more than I can handle. I sure do wish more people loved the library – I recently learned that due to budget cutbacks, the library will now only be open 5 days a week here. They already have such limited hours, so this is very sad indeed. I also think that all you talented web designers should volunteer your talents to your local library to give their terribly pathetic digital catalog system a nice upgrade – it is in a very sorry state!

Julian’s hidden notes. I have the best spouse. Because he wouldn’t be here to make me laugh in person this week, he hid little lovey post-it notes all over our apartment for me to find as I’m going about my business. He texted me a couple nights ago when he knew I’d be watching a movie and told me to “look up” – I found a note that said “I wish I was right here with you.” Last night I was cooking and opened the spice rack to grab some paprika and found a little “something smells good…” note. I turned on the lamp in the dining room and was surprised to find “I <3 U" post its, illuminated from the inside of the lamp shade. In the mailbox, in the shower, under a candle, even in the roll of toilet paper, Julian put a lot of effort into making sure I'd be finding these this week and I LOVE HIM for it. Every girl should be so lucky. I wonder how many are left for me to find???

source

Little love droplets: Trader Joe’s Dark Chocolate Covered Caramels (gluten-free, thankyouverymuch!) | “Hello, Hoy? Whatsinyourwok?” | inside jokes with my J | this town in France, I want to live there! | cruising the farmer’s market after church on Sunday | how much better the fruits and vegetables taste when you know they were grown locally and organically | using leftover ingredients in the fridge to make an amazing breakfast scramble | really high-powered fans on really hot days | The Business of Being Born – INCREDIBLE film for anyone with a uterus (or as my friend Nicole said, “anyone who loves anyone with a uterus”) | having so much energy this week (could it be the lack of gluten?!) | laughing about the ridiculously silly arguments you get in right before you fall asleep just because you’re tired and cranky | husbands who surprise you by cleaning out the fridge | when the valet guys at work let me park in the 1st floor visitors parking! | really productive days at work | seeing magic happen behind the scenes here | when Scout or Pep find a spot and sit there for about 8+ hours a day for days on end | the way they tuck their heads & paws when sleeping | books you can really get into (I just finished Redeeming Love and it was amazing!!) | free smoothies at work (blueberries, bananas, apple juice + raspberry sherbert, mmm!) | a man in the elevator assuming I am 17 years old. Plus 10, I told him! | The fact that french fries are gluten-free | casual chats with my little sister on the phone | helping my Mom design her website |

What’s making your week?

I’m not going to lie, it is sometimes challenging to come up with a list of things I love each Thursday. Especially if I’m sitting in my cubicle at work while doing so… I start to look around me and think “do I love a stapler? how about this tissue box? this mousepad?” The best way for me to create these lists is to keep an on-going list through the week – on a pad of paper, an open “note” on my iPhone, a document on my computer, whatever it may be. Whenever something truly awesome happens or I remember something that makes me giddy, I quickly add it. Mental notes work sometimes, but I tend to forget most of the little things, so that isn’t my preferred method. But enough about this! Let’s get to the real bread & butter:

things i love thursday

handwriting genuine cards/thank you notes to people and sending them via snail mail | buying gifts for my newly engaged, newly wed and newly mommies friends… so much fun! | finding cute things that would make for cute gifts and bookmarking them for later | having a $10 budget for free food at work, except for the fact that it makes me buy things that I otherwise wouldn’t eat (like brownies) | very quick and efficient meetings | the way the sunlight comes in through my window in the late afternoon | having a clean car | my in-laws (I KNOW RIGHT? I’m an anomaly) | looking at my wedding rings | late night fireside double dates drinking raspberry beer atop the Petit Ermitage hotel with Rhett and Link | exciting new deals happening for my husband, seems they are rolling in everyday now, I am so proud of him | lilac candles in my living room | cajun chicken pasta, still one of my favorite recipes ever | waking up with Scout sleeping on my chest | nights when Scout does NOT knock something off the bedside table | having a husband who is handy enough to fix the vacuum after I accidentally vacuumed the phone charger | Dyson and Apple, who make products that can survive a vacuum-sucking-phone-charger incident and still work perfectly fine | discovering that if I pour my cream BEFORE I pour my coffee, I don’t have to stir it and dirty up a spoon | it finally being hot outside | having an emergency fund | being the annoying older sister and sending uplifting mass texts to all my siblings | being the first born | evening emails from my Julia in Italy, who is 15 months pregnant and awake at 4:30am | stretching in the morning on my bedroom floor | our new living room setup at home, it actually FEELS like a home now | keeping fresh fruit in pretty bowls | birthday conversations with Dad | being sore for days after hiking (I guess I needed it?) |

AND HOW ABOUT YOU?!

Hello out there! It’s still really gloomy here, but with so many wonderful things happening lately, it’s hard to let it get me down. Especially when you have a handsome, kind husband, a super fun job, two fuzzy and silly cats and a family the size of Congress (give or take a few – we both come from families of six siblings) in the picture. Here’s what’s lighting up my life this week.

love this

Things I Love Thursday

- Firstly, I am very excited about having my very first post up on 100 Layer Cake! This was my favorite source of inspiration during wedding planning, so it is really surreal and awesome to be helping them out.

- goodreads. I’m a couple years late on this, but I just joined and I’m very excited about having one place to organize my reading lists, get book reviews, etc. I’m a big reading nerd, so this is my kind of social network.

- eBay. I have officially re-fallen in love. It’s been a while since I’ve spent any real amount of time on the site, but I had nearly forgotten how wonderful a tool it is to find quality items at bargain prices. I have at least 10 Saved Searches right now. This brings me to my next point…

- Decorating the apartment. This is a big one. For years I’ve had grand plans to decorate my apartment to the point where I am not embarrassed to have company. You see, up until a couple of months ago, I didn’t even have a complete set of wine glasses (we actually drank wine out of mugs during one dinner party – CLASSY!) Now that I’m all good and married, I’m having so much fun focusing on dreaming up new ways to bring life into our apartment. We’re both total homebodies and rarely go out, so having a space that is comfortable, relaxing, peaceful and inspiring is very important to us, especially since Julian works from home! Just this week I ordered a KitchenAid mixer (more function than style, but still amazing), two Pottery Barn rugs, a new coffee table and a new set of sheets. I have big plans.

very obsessed

Littles: days off from everything | reading on the couch with the balcony doors open | when my Julian monster sleeps in with me (in this case, sleeping in means not getting up at the crack of dawn because he was up working past 2am) | loose side ponytails and loose braids…. I missed having long hair | when my mom sends me handmade quilts | long phone chats with my other mom | texts from my little brother, 4 days late and full of typos | booking trips back home for fall – we’ll be in Virginia the first weekend of Oct and I’m SO looking forward to it! | Virgin America’s mega sales | dinners out with our favorite neighbors Clay & Molly on the fourth of July | watching the waves crash on the rocks in Malibu while eating dinner and drinking reaaaaally tasty frozen beverages. | making mashed potatoes in my new KitchenAid mixer | seeing the girls rolling around on our new rugs, and hearing Julian talk about getting “anti-cat” spray to keep them from scratching them up. anti-cat. really. | making my first green smoothie this morning. bring on the health! | the fact that the grilled cheese truck will be at MySpace tomorrow… hallelujah. | my sister in law’s things i love thursday | writing recipes on recipe cards | old ladies who count out their change at the cash register, unless I’m behind them and in a hurry | days when the Bristol Farms salad bar is good | minivans with rims – more power to you, buddy! | pools | arcade fire | chick flicks | kitty paws | rediscovering shuffle on my iPod. my first iPod was a shuffle, funny how it all comes full circle | fruit snacks, and fruit roll-ups! | sailboats | east coast beaches | the way Scout lays on my tummy when I’m laying on the couch, everytime | the way Pepper talks to the birds | CatPaint app | bikers who think they look cool but really their underwear is showing – and not in a cool way | when my handwriting is IDENTICAL to my mother’s… so weird | driving home from Malibu and seeing all the many other firework shows along the coast/throughout the city | sleeping in TWO days in a row this long weekend! like REALLY sleeping in! | the pink quilt my great-grandmother made me when I was a babe, I still use it all the time | the awesome fan mail Julian gets, people send in the neatest drawings/paintings/paper dolls of him and the characters in his sketches., FOOD (non-perishables), and best of all, drawings and clay figurines of Scout. it blows my mind every time he comes home from the post office | “Scout looks like a cloudy day. and Pepper looks like a storm!” | Julian. yesterday, today, tomorrow, forever. |

windowsill flowers in wine bottle vases

Posted: July 8th, 2010 | Author: Sarah | Filed under: cats, home | Tags: , , , , | 0 Comments

Remember a week or so ago when I mentioned how I loved the flowers in wine bottle vases on my kitchen windowsill? Well, my in-house photographer finally got around to taking photos of said gorgeousness. The good news is, the flower food I sprinkled in each bottle has managed to keep the flowers alive and happy EVEN TO THIS VERY DAY. Talk about magic dust!

Here are some of the photos, which I recommend clicking on (twice) to see the full size image.

BEAUTIFUL, right? And yet they are shamefully upstaged by this stunning glamour shot of my Scout:

P.S. We had an earthquake in the middle of my uploading these photos. Dontcha just love living in California?
